Kaleidoscopic Heritage
Public Art Mural, The Old Town Hall, Bromley

History meets modernity
Drawing influence from the Old Town Hall’s historic leaded-glass windows, the artwork reinterprets the visual heritage of the building through contemporary geometric systems and graphic abstraction.

Historic leaded-glass construction provides the framework for the composition. Its distinctive lead-lined geometries become a contemporary wireframe language, with forms mirrored, repeated, rotated and layered. Viewed through a kaleidoscopic lens, these structures create rhythm, reflection and movement across the architecture.

The visual language brings together the human touch and detailing of the Arts & Crafts tradition, ecclesiastical geometries, Neo-Wren-inspired botanical motifs, and the sleeker lines and accents of later decorative styles.

Approach
Rather than reproducing these references literally, they are distilled into a modular system of lines, shapes and forms and reconstructed as a new visual language. Symmetrical structures meet organic geometries and subtle irregularities, balancing the precision of architectural pattern with a sense of human touch.

The result is a modern graphic approach to heritage, rooted in the building’s history whilst looking confidently forward.

Designed specifically for the courtyard, this public artwork responds to the scale, curves and materiality of the architecture. Interlocking patterns move across the walls as a continuous composition, creating something bold and contemporary whilst embracing the character of the listed building.
